An Indian politician and freedom fighter, Banarasi Das Gupta served as the fourth Chief Minister of Haryana state. Gupta was born in the Bhiwani and studies in Pilani Rajasthan. Later on, he established Praja Mandal in Jind State in Pre-Independent India. He undertook several padayatras, collected thousands of acres of land and distributed it among the landless during the Bhoodan Movement.Das Gupta fought against social atrocities like dowry system, untouchability, and child marriage. He stood for widow remarriage rights and later on started the tradition of community marriages without a dowry. Guptaji also established the All India Vaish Federation and later on Founded and Patroned the Maharaj Agrasen Medical Education & Scientific Research Society at Haryana and also the Trustee of Vaish Mahavidyalaya Trust.
In his political career, he was thrice elected to the Haryana Legislative Assembly and served once as its speaker. He was a minister for several years and served once as Deputy Chief Minister and twice as Chief Minister of Haryana. In 1996, he was elected as Rajya Sabha member and was appreciated by Parliament for best use of MPLAD – Aid allotted to Members of Parliament for the benefit of the public.
