Death Anniversary of Sachin Dev Burman

Sachin Dev Burman, also known as S.D. Burman was one of the greatest music composers of Bollywood industry. A member of the Tripura Royal Family, he started his career with Bengali films in 1937.

SD Burman was born on October 1, 1906, in Comilla (Bangladesh) to Nabadwipchandra Dev Burman, son of Ishan Chandra Manikya (Ishanachandra Dev Burman), Raja of Tripura and Rajkumari Nirmala Devi, the royal princess of Manipur.

His first song recording was done in 1923 at the behest of the Hindustan Musical Company of Kolkata. He became a music director initially in Calcutta with Rajgee. In 1944, he moved to Bombay; this started a new chapter in his life.

He gave unforgettable musical presentations on after another through the films like Kagaz Ke Phool, Bombai Ka Babu, Sujata, Kala Bazaar, Bandini Pyasa, Guide, Taxi Driver, Munimji and so on. He was a Mastreo for a long tenure in Bombay film industry making the folk songs a vessel of his own.

In 1958, he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for the Music direction of Sujata. In 1969, he received National Film Award for the Best Male Playback Singer for “Safai Hogi Teri Aradhana”. In the same year, he was also awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.

He died on 31st October 1975. To honor this maestro India Postal Department has issued a 1500 Paise commemorative stamps on his Birth Centenary.
