Delhi Sultan - Tughluq Dynasty

Third of the five dynasties that ruled Delhi, the Tughluq Dynasty was, perhaps, one of the strongest of the Delhi Sultanates. Established in the early 1300s by Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq, the members of the dynasty were Turkic in origin. Their rule lasted for approximately a century.

In the history of Muhammad-bin-Tughluq’s rule, the region witnessed growth and prosperity and reached its zenith. On the other hand, it also suffered a major economic downfall brought on due to the counterfeiting of token currency introduced by the monarch. During his rule of 26 years, India witnessed the peak of prosperity and rapid integration at the same time. Though his successor, Firuz Shah Tughlaq, pacified the effects of his reign, the Delhi Sultanate received a major setback which was beyond repair.

The Tughlaq rulers were responsible for consolidation of entire kingdom and securing it from the foreign attacks. Moreover, they were accountable for socio-cultural and economic exchange. The attempt made by Muhammad-bin-Tughluq to shift the capital from Delhi to Daulatabad had a positive impact. The barrier between North and South was broken and it opened doors to the exchange of cultures and ideas. It also resulted in increase of trade and commerce, which boosted the economy.

Some of the ideas implemented by Muhammad-bin-Tughluq were badly planned and hastily executed. They made the administration of the Tughluq rulers weak and the Sultanate finally disintegrated into different provinces. For all these reasons, the Tughlaq Dynasty is considered to be the last of the mighty dynasties of Delhi Sultanate.
