Malaya, a former member of the British Commonwealth located in the southern part of the Malay Peninsula, consisted of 11 states: the Unfederated Malay states of Johore, Kelantan, Kedah, Perlis and Trengganu; the Federated Malay States of Negri-Sembilan, Pahang, Perak and Selangor; former members of the Straits Settlements Penang and Malacca. Malaya was occupied by the Japanese during the years 1942-1945. The only local opposition to the Japanese had come mainly from the Chinese Communists who then continued their guerilla operations after the war, finally being defeated in 1956. Malaya was granted full independence on Aug 31, 1957, and became part of Malaysia in 1963.
Coins of Malaya consisted of ½, 1, 5, 10, and 20 cents which were minted at Calcutta (Kolkata), Bombay (Mumbai) and Royal Mint.
