The Alupas were a formidable clan, who ruled the present coastal Karnataka region from the 4th to the 15th centuries. They were never in steady power but remained in the region. Their land was known as Alvakheda as mentioned in many early inscriptions. In the Vijayanagara Period, it was called as Tulunadu or the land of the Tuluvas.
