What is Conch or Shanka?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Conch or Shanka is a wonderful gift given by nature to mankind when blown produces a distinct sound that is considered to be auspicious and soul awakening. The blowing of Conch is the one religious practice followed from the ancient period. The magnificent snow-white gastropod shell is popularly known as the shank, in Sanskrit, it is popularly known as \u2018Sankha\u2019. It is considered as the symbol of purity, brilliance and auspiciousness. \u00a0It is also well known by the name of the Conch. When the apex of the Shank is blown to form a whole, it produces a magnificent sound. Once Conch was also used as a medium of exchange and it was equivalent to coins in India. Conch is also known as Shankh, Shankha or Shankham, the word Shankham is derived from the Sanskrit word \u2018Shum\u2019 and \u2018Kham\u2019. The meaning of the word \u2018Shum\u2019 is good and \u2018Kham\u2019 means water; hence the word \u2018Shankam\u2019 means conch that holds scared water.<\/p>\n

During the ancient period, the Conch Shells or Shank was not only used as a raw material for the manufacture of bangles, rings, and ornaments but was also used as a medium of exchange.<\/p>\n

The blowing of Shank provides a great exercise for the urinary tract, bladder, lower abdomen, diaphragm, and chest and neck muscles. It is also considered a good exercise for thyroid glands and vocal cords that helps us in correcting speech problems.<\/p>\n

Conch has ritual as well as religious importance in Hinduism. The Conch shell is a large predatory sea snail. The significance of the Conch Shell in Hinduism is that\u00a0it is associated with Lord<\/strong> Vishnu<\/strong>, one of the most important Gods in Hinduism. According to the Hindu ideology, the shank is coveted and revered as fame, longevity, and prosperity, and is also the cleanser of sin.<\/p>\n

The sound of the conch is thought to ward off evil spirits and blowing it daily was considered healthy for the respiratory system. Conch is also considered, as the symbol of the god Vishnu, and symbol of wealth, success, and good fortune. The sound of the Shankh produces the sacred \u2018Om\u2019 sound. In Hinduism Vishnu holding the conch represents him as the god of sound.<\/p>\n

Brahma Vaivarta Purana declares that Shankh is the residence of both Lakshmi and Vishnu, bathing by the waters led through a Shankh is considered like bathing with all holy waters.<\/p>\n

It is one of the symbols valued as one of the nine items\/objects of wealth in the Indian tradition. In the medieval period (in the 19th Century) the slaves were valued in terms of Conch Shells and Domestic animals. For Eg: the male slave was sold for one cow and three conch shells and the female slave was sold for 3 cows and around 4-5 conch shells. Even the cow used to sell for 10 Conch shells.<\/p>\n

Arthasastra had mentioned Conch as one of the ones among the variety of treasures entered into the treasury of the government. Conch in terms of coins<\/p>\n

During the ancient period in many parts of the world once conch shell money<\/strong> was used as a medium of exchange that was similar to the other form of commodity money. Before thousands of years in China, the cowrie\u2019s shells<\/strong> were used as Chinese Currencies. In India,\u00a0Conch Shells\u00a0have been used means of exchange. In the Indian State of Orissa, Conch Shells Vintage coins were used as a currency until 1805 CE, later it was abolished by the British India Company and the rupee was enforced. This was one of the causes of the\u00a0Paik Rebellion\u00a0in 1817.<\/p>\n

In one of the coins issued by Pallava of the Kanchi dynasty, The obverse of this coin depicts a bull walking to the right with a conch above and the reverse of this coin depicts a multi-spoke wheel.<\/p>\n

One of the coins issued by Pallavas of Kanchipuram depicts Bull standing to right, crescent, Shrivatsa, ‘snake’ above on the obverse side, and Shanka shell within lotus border on the reverse side of this coin.<\/p>\n

During the medieval period, Conch was a symbol that was used as an emblem of the Travancore<\/a> state. The Kingdom of Travancore had used Conch Shell vintage coins on their national flag and even in their Coat of Arms. We can also see the image of the Conch shell on their coins the gold Sovereign issued by king Rama Varma V. The obverse of this coin depicts the bust of King and the reverse of this coin depicts Coat of Arms.<\/p>\n
