2016-11-28 Mon

Canada’s next series of banknotes is going to feature some of the most iconic women from the country’s history. One of the five women, who were shortlisted, includes poet E. Pauline Johnson and athlete Fanny (Bobbie) Rosenfeld. On 8th December, the final selection and the denomination on which she will appear would be disclosed officially. The notes are expected to be released in 2018.

The candidates include:

Black businesswoman Viola Desmond (1914-1965) from Nova Scotia who fought against racial discrimination at a film theatre in her home province.

Poet and writer E. Pauline Johnson (1861-1913), known for her English and Mohawk traditions and for shaping Canadian literature.

The world's first female aircraft designer: Elizabeth (Elsie) MacGill (1905-1980) who was employed as an aeronautical engineer during the Second World War.

Olympian Fanny (Bobbie) Rosenfeld (1905-1969) who won gold in the relay race and a silver in the 100-metre sprint at the 1928 summer Olympics.

Journalist, educator and feminist Idola Saint-Jean (1880-1945) who fought for the women's vote in Quebec.

These names were shortlisted out of the 461 eligible nominees submitted by Canadians. Though officials revealed that selecting these women was a very difficult task, the nation-wide activity helped generate important discussions among the citizens about the legendary women who contributed to Canada’s success.
