Ceremonial Proof Striking of the 2017 Lions Clubs International Century of Service Silver Dollar

A ceremonial striking of the Proof 2017-P Lions Clubs International Century of Service silver dollar took place at the Philadelphia Mint on 9th November. The coins will be up for sale early next year. As per an official Act, up to 400,000 silver dollars can be issued including Proof and Uncirculated versions to mark the Lions Clubs International centennial anniversary which is celebrated on 7th June.The pricing will include a $10 surcharge that will be donated to the Lions Clubs International Foundation which works for the blind in the United States and abroad; invests in new technologies for the disabled; and invests in youth and those affected by a major disaster. Many prominent personalities, artists and sculptors from the U.S Mint were invited for the event.
Officials revealed that only 19 Proof dollars were struck during the closed event which will be held until the Lions Clubs silver dollars go on sale in 2017 when the coins can be purchased by those who struck them at the ceremony.
The obverse depicts a portrait of founder Melvin Jones with the Lions Clubs International logo. The reverse depicts a male and female lion with a lion cub, superimposed over a globe.
