New Coloured Coin from Falkland Islands Celebrates Queen’s Birthday

2016-10-01 Sat

The 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II was celebrated by the Falkland Islands on 15th September with the release of a special coloured coin.

Queen Elizabeth II is the longest-reigning British sovereign, the longest-married monarch to celebrate 69 years of marriage in November and the longest-reigning female head of state in history.

The reverse design of this Pobjoy Mint coin depicts Queen Elizabeth II with the Order of the Garter which was traditionally started in 1348 as the highest order of chivalry. The Proof finish coins are struck 4 times to achieve that outstanding detail. The obverse features a Pobjoy Mint exclusive design of the Queen that was released last year.

The mintage of the one-ounce sterling .925 silver Crown coloured coin is the Queen’s birth year, 1926. The mintage limit for the one-ounce .999 gold Proof is 62, which is equal to the gun salutes that take place at the Tower of London to commemorate the Queen’s birthday every year. The coins come enclosed in a special packaging along with a certificate of authenticity.
