2016 Rio Olympics Commemorative Coins

Commemorative coins to celebrate Olympics were issued for the first time during the 1952 Helsinki Games. In 2012, handover 1-real coins with a mintage limit of 1,952,000 pieces were issued by the The Banco Central do Brasil, featuring five Olympic rings logo and the Rio 2016 logo. After that, 16 circulating 1-real coins, 16 Proof silver 5-real coins and four gold 10-real coins were issued. Each of the 16 circulating ringed-bimetallic coins has a mintage limit of 20 million pieces.

The Proof .925 fine silver coins honour the flora, fauna, music and architecture of Brazil and the Proof .900 fine gold coins celebrate three competitions and the Olympic torch.

The silver coins have a mintage limit of 25,000 pieces each, out of which 15,000 will be up for individual sale. The gold coins have mintage limits of 5,000 pieces each, out of which 4,500 of each design would be up for individual sale. One set of coins was released in 2014, two were released in 2015, and one in 2016.

All Fauna coins show cyclists at the Fioresta da Tijuca, a tropical rainforest in Rio. All Flora coins depict on their obverses rowing at Lagoa. Music coins feature Beach volleyball players in action on the obverses and the Architecture coins feature runners sprinting at Aterro, a park.
